Impact of Ct Image Deblurring on the Accuracy of Ct- Based Finite Element Modelling of the Proximal Femur

چکیده
Computed Tomography (CT)-based Finite Element (FE) models of femur have been extensively validated and recently applied to clinical studies showing encouraging results [1]. Nevertheless, there remains room for improvement in the accuracy of these models. Validation of FE models against in-vitro strain measurements and failure tests have identified systematic errors at sites where the cortical shell is thin (i.e. femoral neck) [2]. These errors may be explained by Partial Volume Effects (PVEs) in CT images [3, 4]. It has been suggested that CT deblurring algorithms can reduce PVEs in CT images, restoring both geometry and intensity data in thin bone structures [4]. The aim of this work was to investigate if a deblurring algorithm can improve CT-based FE modelling accuracy at the proximal femur.

Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate the geometry of the distal femur and the proximal tibia in the osteoarthritic knee using 3D reconstructive CT scan imaging. Methods: 449 patients with knee osteoarthritis were treated surgically in our center with patient-specific technology total knee arthroplasty. Preoperatively, all the patients underwent a CT scan according to a standard ...
متن کاملPrediction of strength and strain of the proximal femur by a CT-based finite element method.
Hip fractures are the most serious complication of osteoporosis and have been recognized as a major public health problem. In elderly persons, hip fractures occur as a result of increased fragility of the proximal femur due to osteoporosis. It is essential to precisely quantify the strength of the proximal femur in order to estimate the fracture risk and plan preventive interventions. CT-based ...
متن کاملThe effect of alendronate treatment on cortical thickness of the proximal femur in postmenopausal women
Background: Bisphosphonates (BPs) are used extensively for managing the osteoporosis. There are some controversies on atypical fractures of femur that associated with increase in cortical thickness (CT) and BPs’ use. In this study, the effects of alendronate consumption were studied on femoral CT as a predictor for atypical fracture. Methods: Forty nine post-menopausal women age...

Introduction In CT imaging, metallic implants inside the tissues cause metal artifact that reduce the quality of image for diagnosis. In order to reduce the effect of this artifact, a new method with more appropriate results has been presented in this research work. Materials and Methods The presented method comprised of following steps: a) image enhancement and metal areas extraction, b) sinog...
